Past intern experiences

I have been so incredibly blessed by my time at ISM, setting such a solid foundation for my time here in Bangkok, at Nightlight. My understanding of Thai culture, my perspective on missions and serving, my walk with God and security in His love for me and call on my life have all grown immensely in the last month. We’ve been challenged and stretched and loved so much by the McIntosh’s, as they’ve accepted us as students but made us feel like family. I would not feel nearly the peace and confidence in my preparedness for the months ahead of me in Bangkok had it not been for this last month at ISM. I am so excited to begin serving and I can’t speak highly enough of ISM and the wonderful people who run it.

My experience at ISM has been nothing short of phenomenal.  It’s brought me a whole new perspective on missions; long and short term.  The classes provided me with so much great information that has not only been so helpful throughout my internship, but is also something that I can take home with me and apply to my every day life.  These few months have stretched me in the craziest ways and has forced me to grow immensely in my relationship with our creator.

OUR HISTORY

Peter and Sandra McIntosh moved to Bangkok, Thailand, in 2005. After 25 years in pastoral ministry they realized it was their turn to GO! As Peter settled into his role as the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada Regional Director for Southeast Asia, Sandra began volunteering her time at NightLight International, and at first was wondering how God could use her experience as a young adult Pastor and giftings in a foreign context.

Within a few years, she became the Volunteer Coordinator for Nightlight, she blended her passion for missions with her passion for seeing young adults filled with purpose, leading Spirit-directed lives, and began inviting Canadian students to live with her, to intern under her mentorship and to explore what life as a global worker is really like.

Over the course of many years, she hosted 16 young adults, many of whom are back full-time on the missions field today. However, God had an even bigger dream in store, and by 2011, she began pursuing His dream of "formalizing" the internship into a training program, where young adults from all over the world could come to be trained in missions specific to Southeast Asia from a Pentecostal, Spirit-focussed perspective, and then be sent to intern successfully at a ministry in the region.

In 2011, Sandra brought Jessica Pellowe, one of her previous interns who had returned to teach in Bangkok, onto the team in the role of School Administrator. Over the course of the year, with God's inspiration, Sandra created the ISM program model, recruited teachers and host ministries, connected with universities and youth pastors all over Canada, and established Impact School of Missions. Jessica worked behind the scenes setting up the infrastructure of the program, nailing down financial systems, creating forms and documents, and connecting with the first students to help them navigate their time of preparation.

It was with great excitement that the first class was commissioned for the mission field in Sept 2012.

Over the following four years, under Sandra's leadership, ISM saw over 64 young adults come through the program. Several of those students are already back on the mission field, or are seriously pursuing a future in that direction. Many were filled with the Holy Spirit for the first time, and others discovered that when you dream with God anything is possible! You can read some of their reflections here.

In spring of 2016, Peter and Sandra moved back to Ontario, where Peter has accepted a pastorship in Ottawa. Longtime friend and seasoned global worker, Bev Laing, signed on as ISM's new Director, supported by her husband, Gary. You can learn more about Bev here!

We are looking forward to seeing what new and exciting things God has in store for ISM, and how He will inspire and equip Bev to lead and develop the program even further.

Our VISION

ISM is a Holy Spirit-led missions training school located in Bangkok, Thailand, and is a ministry of the PAOC. We believe that the Holy Spirit is raising up a generation of young adults who are longing to live their lives with purpose and are willing to GO, serve, and love the people of South East Asia. ISM will train, equip, and mobilize students to have an impact on the world around them.

ISM is a perfect choice for people between the ages of 17 and 30, who are either looking to fulfill a formal internship for a college or university, or who are independently looking for a venue to explore their calling to overseas missions.

OVERVIEW OF ISM

Students at ISM are welcome from all countries! Instructors range from PAOC missionaries and ministry leaders, to international guests and national leaders. The training session is held at the Thailand Pentecostal Seminary, so there will be Thai Bible college students on site, as well, and opportunities will be provided for the students to interact with each other.

Students will live in a dorm style housing with other ISM students. They will be in a safe and clean environment close to transportation, markets and other important locations.
